POLICE CONSTABLE WALTER STRIDE

A definition of witness.

ELIZABETH STRIDE'S HUSBAND'S NEPHEW

Recognised Her Photograph

Police Constable Walter Stride (1858 - 1913) received a brief mention in many newspapers following his appearance as a witness at the inquest into the death of Elizabeth Stride, who was his aunt by marriage.

He gave evidence on the concluding day of the inquest, Tuesday, 23rd October, 1888 - albeit, his testimony did little more than confirm her identity.

The Bicester Herald, published what he said on Friday, 26th October, 1888:-

Walter Stride, police-constable 385 W. had seen the photograph of the deceased, and identified her as the person who marred his uncle in 1872 or 1873.

His uncle was John Thomas Stride, a carpenter, and the last time he saw him he was living in the East India Dock Road, Poplar."
