Countless books, articles and films cover the infamous Whitechapel murders in the East End of London in 1888.

The bulk of the work, however, has centered on the identity (or identities) of Jack the Ripper, arguing for particular candidates as the most plausible killers and often seeking to discredit the contenders espoused by others.

This conference will instead explore the social, economic, psychological and philosophical aspects of the famous Ripper murders.

SPEAKERS WILL INCLUDE

Drew D. Gray,

Senior Lecturer in the History of Crime at the University of Northampton in the UK. Among other writings, he is the author of London's Shadows: The Dark Side of the Victorian City, which uses the Jack the Ripper murders as a focal point for the history of London's East End.

Martin Fido,

now Senior Lecturer at Boston University and formerly Research Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. He has written The Crimes, Detection and Death of Jack the Ripper and co-authored The Complete Jack the Ripper A to Z and The Official History of Scotland Yard.

Richard Walter,

internationally known criminal profiler and one of the founders of The Vidoq Society, the criminal detection experts who specialize in solving cold cases. The work of the Society and Mr. Walter's expertise are profiled in The Murder Room, the recent study by Michael Cappuzzo.

This conference is a must for all those interested in both the Jack the Ripper case and the wider aspects of the case.
